Beransa: A new product to treat arthritis in dogs

A new product is now available to help tackle osteoarthritis in dogs. The product is called Beransa (Active ingredient: Bedinvetmab). Beransa is used to help manage the pain associated with arthritis in dogs. This medication acts as a monoclonal antibody targeting the nerve growth factor which plays an important role in pain signaling in dogs.

Beransa binds to the nerve growth factor and interrupts the pain signaling pathway and decreases overall pain response associated with osteoarthritis. In turn, this means our canine friends are able to live more comfortably with their arthritis. While the medication does not cure osteoarthritis, it does however reduce the pain associated with the condition and can improve overall quality of life. A similar product Solensia is available for our feline friends.

Beransa is a naturally occurring protein and therefore there is minimal involvement from the kidneys and liver, meaning it is a lot safer to use than our traditional anti-inflammatories used in the management of osteoarthritis.

Beransa is an injection that is given under the skin, similar to a vaccination, and is required monthly to maintain its effects. Minimal adverse reactions have been noted with this drug, although mild reactions at injection sites may uncommonly be observed. This medication has been tested with short-term concurrent use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatories and deemed appropriate, however, its safety is yet to be tested with long-term use of both medications together. This medication has been contraindicated in its use in breeding, pregnant or lactating animals, as well as in animals less than 12 months of age.

Beransa has been shown to improve a dog with osteoarthritis’s general activity levels, enjoyment of life, rising to stand, walking, running and climbing abilities and decrease pain severity.
